Diagnostic Imaging

In order to help you make an informed decision in treating your pet, Cancer Veterinary Centers offers many modalities of in-house diagnostic imaging. Most often you will receive the results at the conclusion of the imaging procedure.

Digital radiographs (x-rays): Digital images can be acquired more quickly and with exposure to less radiation than film images. Because the images are digital, they can be easily manipulated and simultaneously compared with other images. The images can be emailed or uploaded onto a disc, for ease of viewing by the referring veterinarian and the clients.

Ultrasound: Ultrasonography is a non-invasive technique, which rarely requires sedation for a diagnostic examination. The hair is typically clipped to provide the best quality image. Blood flow and abnormalities of internal organs can be identified without exposure to radiation. Ultrasound can also facilitate sampling of organs, masses, or fluid to further illuminate the diagnostic picture.

CT: CT utilizes the same technology as radiographs to form images, but the images are obtained in cross-section to provide more detail. Additionally, the images can be reformatted into a three-dimensional reconstruction. CT scans are useful for evaluating bone, the lungs, and soft tissue masses. Sometimes a contrast agent is given to help delineate between normal and abnormal tissue. Light anesthesia is required because the patient must be completely immobile during the study, however, our 16-slice helical CT is very fast, and most studies are completed in less than 15 minutes.
